Introducing the OAK-T (OAK Thermal), Luxonis' first camera is equipped with a thermal and colour image sensor.
Through the fusion of thermal frames, colour frames, and AI models, an extensive array of applications can be created for use in a variety of different fields, such as:
- Agriculture: Health crops, detection of irrigation issues, detection of pests, livestock health monitoring, etc.
- Industrial: Detect overheating, detect leaks, detect fires, etc.
- Security: Detect intruders (night vision), detect fires, etc.
- Transportation: Detect pedestrians, vehicles, and bicycles for analytics and traffic optimisation.
By employing the OAK-SoM-Pro, the OAK Thermal is able to create an overall compact design. By incorporating the SoM, the design's dimensions are minimised, enabling a seamless and hassle-free installation or integration in any desired location. Additionally, the design is open-source, allowing for necessary adjustments to be made as needed.

Thermal perception
The primary function of thermal cameras is to detect infrared radiation, which is emitted by objects in relation to their temperature. To effectively capture the infrared light emitted by the objects or scene being observed, a specialised lens capable of infrared (IR) detection is utilised. This lens is responsible for focusing the infrared light, which is then scanned by an array of infrared-detector elements ("pixels") in the camera.
Power consumption
The power consumption mainly depends on the workload of the chip, as the RVC2 consumes the majority of the power.
- Base consumption + PoE circuitry + camera streaming: 3W - 3.5W
- Thermal sensor: ≤1W
- AI subsystem consumption: ≤1W
- Stereo depth pipeline subsystem: ≤0.5W
- Video Encoder subsystem: ≤0.5W
The overall power consumption can be ≤ ~ 6.5W when all the features are being used at 100% simultaneously. In order to decrease the power consumption, you have the option to lower the frames per second (FPS) of the entire pipeline. By doing so, the subsystems will not be fully utilised and will consume less power.
