What is a GigE Network Card?

A Gigabit Ethernet network card, or GigE network card, is a piece of hardware that allows a computer to connect to a network and exchange data at gigabit Ethernet speeds with other devices. The network card can be integrated into the motherboard of a computer or it can be installed as a seperate expansion card.

Gigabit Ethernet (also known as 1GigE) allows data to be sent at a speed of one gigabit per second (Gbps). In comparison to the previous standard, Fast Ethernet, which works at 100 megabits per second (Mbps), the current GigE is much faster.
