The board is remarkably compact with dimensions of approximately 300mm x 16mm. The camera module boasts a neck width of merely 6mm, a standout feature that renders it highly suitable for applications where both size and image quality hold utmost importance, such as endoscopes, spy surveillance, and similar uses. A short ribbon cable is utilised to establish a connection with the Raspberry Pi. The camera is then connected to the Pi's BCM2835/BCM2836 processor via the CSI bus, a high-speed link that efficiently carries pixel data from the camera back to the processor. This bus travels along the ribbon cable, which serves as the physical link between the camera board and the Pi.
The camera sensor boasts a native resolution of 5 megapixels and a fixed focus lens. It can capture still images at a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels and record videos at 1080p30, 720p60, and 640x480p60/90. The camera connects to the Raspberry Pi through one of the two small sockets on the board's upper surface, using the dedicated CSI interface designed specifically for camera interfacing. The CSI bus has a high data transfer rate and exclusively carries pixel data. The camera is fully supported in the latest version of Raspbian, the preferred operating system of Raspberry Pi.
